WHAT DID YOU SAY?
We were at my youngest son’s house visiting a few days ago, and there was a show on TV showing the police stopping “Karens.”  The language was so bad it would have made a sailor blush.  My heart and especially my soul were so bruised that I left the living room and escaped into the garage.  Two of my sons were out in the garage catching up, they had not talked in a long time.  They realized I was upset and asked me why.  I told them about the show and the language, and they agreed.  I felt dirty after hearing those epithets; my soul had been pierced. 
Some use the more common, innocuous words, and that is bad enough, but when others use God’s name to curse or make some sort of point, THAT is taking the Lord’s Name in vain.  I seem to remember something about doing that.
Exodus 20:7 says:“You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain.”
Then there is“But I say to you that for every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment. For by your words, you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.”  Matthew 12:36-37
You see, my friends, cursing, no matter how it comes out does no one any good.  First, it indicates a lack of vocabulary.  Second, it does not help a situation and may inflame it.  Third, it is a sin. 
When I was first saved, I had to clean my language up.  How could I be a light to others around me while using language like that?  I couldn’t.  It only took about a week to catch myself, and within two weeks, I was able to avoid cursing completely.  It changed my thinking and how I reacted to distressing situations.  I became calmer and pleasanter to be around.  I also found that others around me would avoid cursing.  I influenced others without even trying!  God is Good!
When I taught English in high school, the students were in love with one particularly vile word.  I wanted them to stop.  I gave a vocabulary lesson on the word, making it as boring as humanly possible.  Then I introduced them to Shakespearean insults. They had to choose one phrase each from columns A, B, and C.  My wing of the school started to drop the use of the offensive word and ring with Shakespeare!
